Welcome to Gustavus Township
Gustavus Township was named after Colonel Lemuel Starr`s son Gustavus, after the Colonel purchased the rural area in 1800. The first settler to arrive was Joshiah Pelton, who arrived from Connecticut in 1802. He was later joined by his son Jessie and his wife Ruhamah DeWolfe, who became the first woman to live in Gustavus Township.

The first schoolhouse in Gustavus Township was built in 1813. In 1898 a new school was built west of the center at the cost of about $4,000. This school consolidated all the children from all the districts to one central building, This brought it the honor of being the first centralized school in the United States. This is the present day site of our park, walking track and children`s playground.
